Asus EEEPc: Portable storage and a little geekdom

The technology writer and uber Blogger at Chron.com, Dwight Silverman, recently got a review unit of the Asus EEEPC ultra portable laptop. While my coworkers and I where checking it out, he snapped a photo of us and put it up on his blog. http://blogs.chron.com/techblog (blog title "Behold the strange allure of the Eee PC")

It's a cool feeling to see yourself "up in lights" so to speak. Anyway the EEE has one big drawback in relation to a photog's laptop--very little storage space. My flash cards have as much space. Yes, I could purchase an Epson P-3000 of or Digital Foci photo safe, but they aren't laptops.

The other alternative is to buy a small laptop--they're in the $450-$600 range which isn't too bad, but they're still big compared to the little EEE and portablility is the key here. The cost would be about the same (after some hardware hacking), wouldn't require any hacking, would have more space, and a bigger keyboard. The downside again is the size. Even at 15.4" screen size these laptops are around 6lbs. This isn't much compared to the 12 lbs my current one is, but it's still not ideal for treking about in the wild. The little EEE weighs in at 2lbs. That's lighter than my camera with the battery pack and lens.

What to do? Since, I'm not in a position to buy anything yet, I'll keep watching the market. Perhaps someone will come up with an ultra portable that doesn't cost $$$$.

UPDATE: Dwight has some pull in the tech community. The article has spread and picked up by CrunchGear
and as Dwight spotted, made it to the front page of Techmeme.
